Troubleshooting Guide For all games in the EXTREME MAC 12-PACK Installing - When installing with the EXTREME MAC 12-PACK Installer, you'll need to scroll down or extend the window to see all install options. Click the "i" button next to each install option to get additional information for that option. The installer may be re-run at any time. No changes will be made to your System Folder by any of the 12 standard game installs. The Alley 19 Bowling and Marathon Network Installs will put network extensions into your system folder (but will not overwrite newer versions of the extensions). You do not have to restart your computer after these network installs. You will have to restart your computer if you install QuickTime. Documentation - Refer to your CD booklet for the final word on installation and basic operations (or the "General Instructions-all games" file which is an electronic copy of the CD booklet in Acrobat format). Open the "General Instructions Inside" folder to locate several important documents. See the individual Read Me files and electronic manuals for detailed information on game play. Some manuals are in Adobe Acrobat format. If you don't have Acrobat Reader installed, run the Acrobat Reader 3.0 Installer. QuickTime - Marathon requires QuickTime . You'll need to install it separately if it is not on your system. Most computers already have QuickTime installed. Choose the QuickTime 2.5 install option from the "EXTREME MAC 12-PACK Installer". If you have a newer version of QuickTime, the installer will not overwrite it. Serial Numbers - Some of the games require a serial number the first time you play. These numbers are listed below and can be found inside your CD booklet. Serial Numbers for all games: A-10 Attack!: No serial number required Alley 19 Bowling: No serial number required Bumbler Bee-Luxe: No serial number required Checkers Deluxe: No serial number required Diamonds 3D: No serial number required F/A-18 Hornet Classic: 113-88-4677 Glider Pro: No serial number required Marathon: DGBH4FYXZ282RLVV (2nd network computer: N2AUGME8J1X137CC) Pathways Into Darkness: No serial number required ShadowWraith: 5769SWM112261-R1 Solitaire Antics: No serial number required Troubled Souls: No serial number required Use of CD-ROM - Most of the games can be run from the CD, but it is recommended you run the "EXTREME MAC 12-PACK Installer" to place them on your hard disk for improved performance. Only Alley 19 Bowling requires the CD during game play for the '50s music. It must also be installed before it can be played. Glider Pro requires that the CD be inserted the first time you play only. Registration - At the end of the installation, you'll be asked to register via e-mail or by printing out a form. Only choose the e-mail option if you have software for connecting to the Internet. The e-mail registration software will not work with AOL or CompuServe connections. -------------------------------------- Technical Support Assistance Sound problems, crashes, game won't install or run. If you're having problems installing or getting any of the games to work properly, first review the CD booklet (or the "General Instructions-all games" file which is an electronic copy of the CD booklet). Each game has additional instructions located in the manual or Read Me inside its game folder. If you have access to the Internet, you will also find helpful information on Apple's web site at "http://www.apple.com/support/" or their new iMac Emergency Manual (which has lots of good information for all Mac users) at "http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n43050?OpenDocument&imac". Do not type the quote characters when entering these URLs into your browser. Review the solutions listed below as they cover most of the problems users encounter. The information below is most likely the same information that a customer service representative will provide when contacted. If you must get outside technical help, remember each game is supported by a different company (the original publisher). Check your CD booklet (or the "General Instructions-all games" file which is an electronic copy of the CD booklet) for the proper telephone number or email address for contacting a support person. System Requirements: System 7 or 8, 68040 or Power Mac, 256 color display, 8 MB RAM (12 MB recommended for some games) and a CD-ROM drive. Bumbler Bee-Luxe requires a Power Mac. 1. Can't install - Sometimes virus protection software or other extensions can cause problems with an Installer. Turn off most of your extensions (using the Extension Manager, Conflict Catcher or similar software) and restart the computer. Note: You must leave the Apple CD extension on to allow the computer to read from the CD-ROM). Now try to install again. If you continue to have problems installing, then rebuild your desktop and run Norton Disk Docter or Disk First Aid. See below. 2. Insufficient memory - Sometimes the lack of enough memory (RAM) can cause a game to crash or act strange. If you have a system with only 8 MB of RAM, then you may want to turn on virtual memory or use RAM Doubler to increase your memory to 16 MB. Make sure to Quit other open applications. Pull down the icon menu in the top right hand corner of your computer and see if other applications are running. You may have closed a window, but not Quit the application. This will help in most cases. The music for games like ShadowWraith which have a complete sound track may "sputter" when using virtual memory or RAM Doubler, but you may not have an alternative. If you have a lot of memory (RAM) on your system, you may want to turn off virtual memory or RAM Doubler if you experience "sputtering" music or jerky animations. If you have plenty of memory, you can increase the memory allocated for a particular game. This can be done by selecting the game icon (with just one click, do not double-click which will start up the game). Then choose Get Info from the Finder's File menu. You will be presented with the Get Info dialog box. You may want to add a few megabytes (1000K - 3000K) to the Minimum and Preferred Size boxes for that game. This will change this application so that it always has more RAM available to it. Close the Get Info box by clicking the top left corner. Now try running the game again. You may conserve memory in Alley 19 Bowling by using the same bowling character for more than one player. 3. Color monitor problems & settings - To change the color setting on your computer go to the Apple Menu on the upper left portion of your screen. Go down to the Control Panels and select Monitors (or Monitors & Sound for MacOS 8). Inside the Monitor's dialog box you should see a box with some numbers like 4,16, 256, Thousands, or Millions. Select the right number (normally 256 colors) and it will change your monitor. You can set this back after you finish the game if necessary. 4. Sound problems - If you are not hearing the '50s sound track when playing Alley 19 Bowling review the following. Alley 19 Bowling stores the 50's background music as audio files on the "EXTREME MAC PACK" CD. Make sure you have the CD in the CD-ROM drive when you start up the game. Make certain your Sound control panel, Sound In [Options], must be set to Internal CD and Playthrough. You must have the "EXTREME MAC PACK" in an internal drive to get the music, as external CD-ROM drives can only transfer data, not music, unless you've connected the proper cables. If you do have an external CD-ROM drive, please check to see if it has any Audio Out jacks. If it does, you may be able to hook the Audio Out of your CD-ROM drive to the Audio In of your Mac. You may also wish to connect external speakers directly to your CD-ROM drive and hook the Audio Out jacks to the speakers.. Tip: You may listen to other music while bowling with Alley 19. Before you launch Alley 19, do the following: insert your music CD, start up the AppleCD Audio Player, and adjust your volume. Now launch Alley 19 and click "Continue with no Music" when prompted. Do not try this unless you have 16 MB or more of RAM. 5. General problems - If you're experiencing crashs, freezes, unexpected quits, or other types of problems you should try the following. a) Rebuild your desktop - This is something that is easy to do and should be done at least once a month to make sure all your software works properly. To rebuild your desktop (file directories), restart your computer and hold down both the Option and Command (Apple) keys. Keep them down until you get the dialog asking if you want to rebuild your hard disk. Click OK and it will take a few minutes. If you have more than one hard disk, you will get the same dialog for the next hard disk when this one is done rebuilding. b) Turn off extensions - Conflicts with extensions is the single biggest problem which can potentially interfere with a game running properly. Some third-party extensions and control panels (especially shareware ones), may not be compatible with other software or these games). Once you've installed your software to your hard disk, you can turn off all extensions by restarting your computer and holding down the Shift key. Keep the Shift key down until you see the message "extensions off". Now try running the game again. If the game runs properly, then you have some type of extension conflict. It is your responsibility to isolate the extension that is causing the problem. This is normally done by turning one extension on at a time (or a small group of extensions) until the problem occurs again. Use the Extension Manager or Conflict Catcher to do this. You'll have to restart your computer each time. When the problem recurs, you then know what extension is causing the problem. At this point, you can either eliminate the extension if you don't need it, or turn it off whenever you play the game. The Extension Manager allows you to set up different Sets of extensions which can easily be turned on or off. You must restart your computer each time extension sets are changed. c) Run Norton Disk Docter or Disk First Aid - Occasionally, your hard disk directories can get corrupted. This happens sometimes when you have had a power failure or did not shut down your computer properly. To correct this problem, rebuild your desktop by restarting your computer and holding down both the Option and Command (Apple) keys. Keep them down until you get the dialog asking if you want to rebuild. Click OK and it will take a few minutes. If you continue to have problems, you may have a more serious problem. Use Norton Disk Docter, Disk First Aid or a similar utility to scan your hard disk and correct further problems. Note: you may have to boot your computer from a startup CD-ROM in order to fix these type of problems on your System hard disk. You can use your MacOS CD for this by restarting and holding the "C" key down to tell it to start up from the CD. After you've done this, you should be able to find Disk First Aid on the CD. If you don't feel comfortable doing these last few steps, you may want to enlist someone you know with computer experience or your local computer store to help you out. If you do have corrupted directories, you will have problems with most of your software, not just the games. d) Turn off File Sharing - Occasionally a game can crash (Type-2 errors, etc.) or display "jerky" animation when File Sharing is turned on. File Sharing is used to share information between two or more computers. If you are experiencing this, turn off File Sharing if it is on. Go to the "Sharing Setup" (for MacOS 7) or "File Sharing" (MacOS 8) Control Panel and click the Stop button for File Sharing in the dialog displayed. e) Throw Away Preferences - Sometimes a games preference file will get corrupted. To fix this, throw it away and the game will create a new one. To throw away a certain Games preference file you will have to go into your System Folder on your hard drive. When your in the System Folder look for a folder called Preferences and open it up. Once inside the Preference Folder look for the certain game's preference file (example- A19 Bowling Prefs) and then drag it to the trash. The next time you play, the game will make a new preference file for you. f) Can't read from my CD-ROM - If your CD doesn't appear to have any files in it, then it may have dirt or fingerprints which are causing the problem. Try taking the CD out of the drive, and cleaning it with a soft, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth on the shiny, silver side which has no printing. (The side with the multiple colors and printing can be freely touched as it is not used by the CD drive mechanism). If this doesn't fix the problem, email StarPlay about a replacement CD at (support@starplay.com) or mail your CD with a note and your return address to StarPlay at: Attn: Replacement CD StarPlay Productions, Inc. P.O. Box 19679 Boulder, CO 80308-2679 6. Network Play - Both Alley 19 Bowling and Marathon allow for network play. In order to connect to other computers in a network game, you must have choosen the Network Install option for these games. You can always install the Network Option at a later time if that option was not choosen at first. Making successful network connections requires basic knowledge of using a network and/or the Internet. There are manuals in each of the game folders which fully explain how to play over a network. Also consult the StarPlay web site (www.starplay.com) for help in making network connections (and finding your competitors IP address) for Alley 19 Bowling and the Bungie web site (www.bungie.com) for additional help with Marathon network play.
