in four weeks.

How To View This Document

-------------------------

As of version 3.2, the GPHL is in "setext" format, as developed

by Adam Engst (of "TidBITs" fame); this means you can now use

Akif Eyler's free "EasyView" program, an excellent multi-format

text viewing utility available from all good Mac ftp sites. To

read this file with EasyView, put this file into a folder with

a copy of the "TidBITs" sample settings file as provided with

EasyView, rename the settings file to "setext", then launch

EasyView by double-clicking on the "setext" settings file.

Failing that, any ol' word processor (Word, MacWrite) - or text

editor that can read files greater than 32k (BBEdit, Nisus) -

will quite happily display it for you. If you're using a word

processor, it is best if you view this document in a small

monospaced font, such as Monaco 9 point or Courier 9 point.

Disclaimer

----------

You must OWN THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM to apply the patches. All

patches have NOT been personally tested and no responsibility

will be taken for the use of the below patches. Remember to

ALWAYS patch a **COPY** of the program to be patched, **NEVER**

   the original.

These patches are to be used at the owner's risk - neither the

GPHL compilers nor any of its contributors can be considered

liable for any damage or loss of data caused by a patched

   program.

Notes from Geoffrey for GPHL 3.4

--------------------------------

The delay in getting v3.4 out has been almost untenable for some

people - in the past two weeks alone, I've had nearly 120 requests

for the GPHL! I apologise for this humungous delay, mitigiating

factors his time include a move of house, a three-month high

work load contract, and - thanks to said contract - the purchase

and settling in of a new PMac 7100/80, which promptly blew its

processor 5 days after purchase. Having to wait over a week for

a warranty-replacement logic board was none of my doing :(.

Most importantly, this will be the last version to be posted via

my personal attempts at manually maintaining a mailing list - the

list has grown to over 600 members, and the number of bounced

messages last time I posted nearly killed our host's mailer! :(

In the future, you'll have to download your copies of the GPHL

from sites listed in the comp.sys.mac.games FAQ, the "How Do I

Get The GPHL" entry below, or by watching comp.sys.mac.games

   for postings regarding the GPHL.

Several patch entries do not have appropriate version numbers,

so these have been marked with "v?.?". If you know which

version a patch is good for, please let me know!

Also, I'm putting out a plea for patch submitters to include

_before patch_ values as well as the actual patches - I feel

this is important to allow patchers to be sure that they are

patching the right bytes. Quite often when I was converting the

patches to the new format, some patches were missing the

before-patch values, so these have been substituted with

   'xxxx'.

Why this list?

--------------

Originally, Holger started this list because he (like most of

us) hated the extremes in copy protection being used -- ghastly

preventative steps (ha!) like manual-look-up, and installation

location locking, or asking for the master floppy **every** time

you started it up, or decode some stupid code with the provided

Captain Marvel Secret Decoder Ring ...

The argument is heated, I'll admit, and the general consensus

of the net is that copy protection is good **BUT** it has to be

as inconspicuous as possible (such as that used by Casady &

Greene (with Spaceway 2000) that only asks for the master disk

once after installing). We gamesters want to be able to play

our game whenever we want to, without having to fart-ass around

with fiddly things before we get to the meat in the sandwich,

and anything that interferes with the enjoyment of a game

should be dealt with as swiftly as possible.

Thus, GAME PATCHLIST (as it was originally known) was created to

remove or bypass these annoying distractions. Because of its

inherent nature, the Patchlist picked up a whole pile of other

cracks along the way, including some for games which would

qualify for the 'inconspicuous copy protection' described

   above.

Unfortunately, to avoid having this list being branded a "game

pirate's how-to" and having the net.cops closing down our

domain, I've decided to remove a few of the more ... err,

blatant cracks from GPHL. If you winge & moan about this,

tough. I'm doing this to protect our net, not just to save my

skin from any hassle. Things like net serial checks (e.g.

Minotaur or Spectre) and initial serial-number-install (such as

Crystal Caliburn) go to the great bit bucket. Unhappy? Then go

buy a copy instead of looking in here for a free game, leech.

Pirates will just have to look elsewhere. I'm sorry. Not.

Cracks will still be received and printed, though, fear not -

but only if they help the Mac game publishers know that we

won't accept fiddly & just plain annoying copy protection. Some

of the types of copy protection you will find in this list

   include:

   - code lookup with a device or manual whenever the game is

     launched

   - requesting of the master floppy each time it is launched

   - position-locking during the install process (e.g. Crystal

     Caliburn)

... you get the picture ...

   Publishers, you have been warned!

Hacks, however, are great! Little tweaks & pokes which make us

invincible or give us extra lives & powers are the little spicy

bits of fun which keep us coming back to the game, just to see

how far you can *really* go.

If you've got any code-level hacks, then mail 'em on in!

Where Do These Patches Come From?

---------------------------------

   All over the place!

   The net.

   The newsgroup comp.sys.mac.games.

   Friends.

   Anonymous contributors to my mailbox.

   Don't ask :-).

How Do I Get The GPHL?

----------------------

The GPHL mailing list is no more!

I used to run a mailing list for the GPHL, but I was having to

build the list manually because my sysadmin refused to let me run

a real mailing list program on our host; Eudora can only do so

much! This issue will be the last posting to the mailing list I'd

built up over the past two years; in future, announcements of new

issues of the GPHL will be posted to comp.sys.mac.games, plus

there'll be a regular (once a fortnight) posting from me about

locations where it can be found. From now on, I'll tell the world

where it is, its up to you to go get it.

A regular entry in Christina Schulman's excellent c.s.m.g. FAQ

for the GPHL will be updated to show current availability info and

   sites to download it from.

I'm currently negotiating with another Mac gamester who's offered

us an address where we can auto-request copies of the GPHL; more

information on that as developments happen.

GPHL Joins WWW!

---------------

Everyone's doing it, and we're no exception! Here is a variety of

WWW locations where the latest GPHL can be found:

   My own home pages:

     http://www.apanix.apana.org.au/~geoff/files/gphl-current.txt

   Dave Stanworth's Games Domain:

     http://wcl-rs.bham.ac.uk/GamesDomain/info/gphl.html

   Mark Lilback's GWU Gaming Society:

     http://gwis.circ.gwu.edu:80/~gwugs/ghpl/

Phillip Roos' "Mac Fun" pages (includes patch submission form!):

     http://www.nada.kth.se/~d92-pro/fun/patchindex.html

Contacting The GPHL Co-Ordinator

--------------------------------

Do you have a patch to add to the list? Confirmation of a patch?

A query on a patch? Just want to say hello? Then send me some

mail! If it's something to do with the GPHL, then you *MUST*

put "GPHL" somewhere in the subject, otherwise I might skip it

or file it somewhere and not get around to it for some time.

Remember: "GPHL" in the 'Subject:' field!!

Shareware vs. Commercial Games

------------------------------

If there are any other shareware games listed in the GPHL,

please let me know. Cheat hacks are allowed, but bypassing

registration info is a big no-no from now on.

Shareware game authors are to be encouraged, not ripped off.

Send in your dollars when asked, and the entire Mac gaming

   community will benefit.

Of course, if you have any neat "hacks" for any shareware

products that give the player extra lives, time, goodies or

what-have-you, then we want to know! :)

Patches Which Don't Work As Listed

----------------------------------

So, you've tried to patch a game, and it didn't work. Check that

the patch you are attempting is for the same version of the

game that you are trying to patch (to determine the version, do

a Get Info from the Finder, or check the 'About' dialog from

within the program (if it has one)).

If you are _certain_ that you have the right version and the

right patch, but it _still_ doesn't work, then there is a good

chance that the patch is faulty, and shouldn't be installed.

Revert back to your unpatched program, send me mail describing

your problems, and hope that a fix or update will be included

in the next edition of the GPHL.

Submitting New or Updated Patches

---------------------------------

If you have an otherwise unlisted patch, or have discovered a

flaw in an existing patch and have an update, please submit it

to me via mail at geoff@tara.apana.org.au.

The patch should, ideally, be formatted as follows:

   [Program_name] [version]

   - <effect of patch>

     - <notes on patch>

     - <optional instructions>

     - <location of patch>

       - change <original_values>

             to <new_values>

Please, remember to include the *original* values of the bytes

to be changed, and any specific instructions needed for editing

(use a disk editor instead of ResEdit, etc).

Patching Instructions

---------------------

Because of the inherent nature of applying most of these cracks

& cheats, it is assumed that you have at least a working

knowledge of ResEdit (and the perils involved), Mac operation,

Mac file structure basics, etc. The programs used to apply the

patches are _very_ powerful, and if you make **one** little

mistake it could kill the program you're working on - worse, it

could seriously trash your hard drive. We assume you know what

you're doing, so if you mess up big-time, don't say we didn't

   warn you.

Unless otherwise specified, all patches can be made by using

Apple's resource editor, ResEdit 2.1 (or later), available from

most ftp sites or directly from ftp.apple.com. If ResEdit is

not used, usually a sector-level editor such as Norton's Disk

Editor (part of Norton's Utilities For Macintosh 2.0), HexEdit

(available from most ftp sites), MacSnoop or Fedit+ is called

   for.

Also, note that for quite a few games, there is more than one

patch to perform the same thing; unless you feel safe in the

knowledge that you know *exactly* what you are doing, do _NOT_

perform more than one patch of each type, or Bad Things could

   happen.

How To ResEdit a patch

----------------------

   - make a COPY of the file to be patched

   - start up ResEdit and open the file to be patched from within

ResEdit, or drag & drop the file to be patched on the ResEdit

     icon

   - open the resource to be patched by double-clicking on the

category of resource, or by selecting it and pressing

     'Return'

   - open the appropriately numbered resource with the generic

template (unless you have Code Editor installed, this is the

     default)

   - for example, "CODE 12, offset 0ABC" means resource type CODE,

item number 12, and the byte to be patched is the $0ABC'th

     byte in the resource.

   - the generic template will give you a scrolling window of text

in the format "offset: <byte-pairs in hex> <ASCII

     representation of hex>"

   - scroll through this list until you find the offset as

mentioned in the patch, or if you are asked to search for a

tring of bytes, use the ResEdit "Find Hex..." command

   - locate the byte(s) to be changed as shown in the "change" line

     of the patch

   - select each byte (two characters) to be changed one at a time,

and enter in the new values

   - DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR WORK!!! If you incorrectly patch something,

it will quite likely crash, fail to run, or do worse things

     like scramble your hard drive

   - once satisfied the patch has been correctly installed, close

the generic template window and save your work (Cmd-S from the

     ResEdit 'File' menu)

   - quit ResEdit

   - test the patch by starting up the patched copy

   - if it works, CONGRATULATIONS!! If the program still behaves in

an unpatched manner, or crashes or quits, then the patch is

     either

     - incorrectly installed, make another copy & try again

     - incorrectly posted (in which case, *MAIL ME IMMEDIATELY!*)

     - for a different version of the program to be patched than

       what you have

How To Sector-edit a patch

--------------------------

   - make a COPY of the file to be patched

   - start up your sector-level editor

   - open the "Search" or "Find Hex" (or equivalent) dialog box

   - enter the string to be searched for and begin the search

     OR

   - jump to the offset specified using whatever means provided

   - double check that you've found the right place

   - carefully change each byte (two characters) one at a time to

     the replacement value

   - DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR WORK!!! If you incorrectly patch something,

it will quite likely crash, fail to run, or do worse things

     like scramble your hard drive

   - once satisfied the patch has been correctly installed, write

     the sector back to disk

   - quit your sector editing program

   - test the patch by starting up the patched copy

   - if it works, CONGRATULATIONS!! If the program still behaves in

an unpatched manner, or crashes or quits, then the patch is

     either

     - incorrectly installed, make another copy & try again

     - incorrectly posted (in which case, *MAIL ME IMMEDIATELY!*)

     - for a different version of the program to be patched than

       what you have

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This little bit of text is purely for the benefit of EasyView

users - the +-+- stuff above is used to delimit the 'info'

part of the GPHL from the actual patch lists in the article

   pane of EasyView.

       change to D1BC 0DA4 3EC8

Arkanoid v?.? (to run on most Mac's)

-------------------------------------

? patch the game to make it System 7 friendly

     - Note: some reports from PowerBook owners say that even

after patching, Arkanoid still crashes on their machine

       (odd screen size, maybe?)

     - switch to B/W (1-bit video) before playing

     - CODE 4, offset 0042

       - change 66

             to 6D

   # Enable "super-player" mode (free capsules on demand)

     - start the game as per normal

Armour Alley 1.0

----------------

   - All patchs, open the Armor Alley suspended game file with a hex

editor such as the Norton Disk Editor

   # Change the number of helicopters you have

     - offset 3ECA - 3ECB

       - change the two bytes to the number of helicopters you want

         (ie. 0064 = 100 helicopters)

   # Change the number of funds you have

     - offset 3ECC - 3ECD

       - change the two bytes to the number of funds you want

         (ie. 5000 = 20480 funds)

       - NOTE: Funds go up as forces go further in the field, if

funds go over 7FFF they will become captured; I recommend

5000 as a safe figure (and a lot of funds)

   # Change the number of machine gun bullets (or those silly non-

     tracking missiles) you have

     - offset 3F84 - 3F85

     - change the two bytes to the number of bullets you want

       (ie. FFFF = 65535 bullets)

     - NOTE: FFFF will show up as -1 on the display in Armor Alley.

The bullet count will continue counting -2,-3,-4 until it

gets to 7FFF where it will start counting down from there

       (effectively 65535 bullets)

   # Change the number of bombs you have

     - offset 3F86 - 3F87

       - change the two bytes to the number of bombs you want

         (ie. FFFF = 65535 bombs)

       - NOTE: The rules for bombs are the same as for bullets

   # Change the number of missiles you have

     - offset 3F88 - 3F89

       - change the two bytes to the number of missiles you want

         (ie. FFFF = 65535 missiles)

       - NOTE: The rules for missiles are the same as for bullets

   # Change the number of men in your helicopter

     - offset 3F8A - 3F8B

       - change the two bytes to the number of men you want in your

         helicopter

(ie. FFFF = 65535 men in your helicopter)

       - NOTE: The rules for men are the same as for bullets

       - NOTE: When you drop men your funds increase rapidly because

you get funds for equipment as it is further out in the

         field

Bane Of The Cosmic Forge v?.? (Apr 24, 1991 version)

-----------------------------------------------------

? When restoring a game, anything is a valid password

     - CODE 1, offset 86D0

       - change 6C

             to 60

     - CODE 1, offset 8702

       - change 67

             to 60

? This will remove the "match the codes" box

     - NOTE: this apparently works fine until you get into combat,

       then you always miss

     - CODE 1, offset 83FE

       - change 0C6D 0001 C268 6606

             to 3B7C 0001 C268 4E71

BattleChess 1.0 & 1.01

----------------------

   ? Disable the password dialog

     - CODE 14, offset 32A0

       - change 6600 00FE

             to 4E71 4E71

     - I've had one user report this worked with 1.0, another user

said it failed with 1.0; caveats apply, naturally!

Brattacas 1.0

-------------

? The program will never ask for the master disk

     - search for 2F10 4217 205F 4E90

       change to 203C 99C4 5501 4E71

Capitalist Pig 1.0.2

--------------------

? When password dialog appears, press enter to bypass

     protection.

     - CODE 4, offset 1F0E

       - change 6706

             to 6006

     - CODE 4, offset 1F10

       - change 4EAD 013A A9F4

             to 4E71 4E71 4E71

? Remove the password dialog box completely

     - CODE 4, offset 1D0C to 1F1C inclusive

       - change all words to 4E71

? Set initial funds to any desired level

     - this patch requires experience with a debugger such as

       Macsbug

     - break in at the initial setup dialog and set a breakpoint

       at SetUpDia +200, which is a MOVE.L #$F4240,-13A(A6); the

$F4240 is 1,000,000 decimal, which is the normal initial

funds - simply change this to any desired value, and resume.
